Before All Creatures Great and Small, James Herriot was a wide-eyed veterinary student in Glasgow, pursuing the career he had dreamed of since childhood. Set against the backdrop of rising fascism in Europe and profound social change at home, this British drama brings back a much-loved character. Iain De Caestecker (The Fades) stars as Herriot, with Gary Lewis (Billy Elliot), Amy Manson (Being Human), and Ben Lloyd-Hughes (The Hour). 3 episodes, 3 hrs, SDH.
After getting off to a disastrous start with two of his professors, James seeks to redeem matters by diagnosing the ailment of a suffering dray horse. The young veterinarian learns that caring for animals can be more complicated than simply trying to save their lives.
James gets the chance for some invaluable hands-on experience treating sick livestock, but Rob McAloon only sees the chance to make some much-needed cash. Whirly Tyson finds herself targeted by Professor Gunnell and decides to exact her revenge.
Fellow student Jenny Muirhead has her eyes on James. When he takes a job as a vet at her parents' kennels, he finds the position comes with strings attached. Whirly heads for a showdown with Professor Gunnell, whose carelessness leads James to conclude that his time in Glasgow may be at an end
